Carrots

Carrots are best grown from seed and it is fantastic to have them self-germinating year after year in the garden. No need for punnets or heat trays or transplanting, just let the seed fall and find its self a home in the soil as nature intended. You can see them in the photo above, with the netting pulled back ready for thinning.

Carrots will become overcrowded and the trick is to thin them, otherwise they will stay small and twisted. As they grow, simply pull out a few here and there gently - wriggle them out rather than pull them out, you don’t want to interfere with the neighbours. You don’t have to do them all at once, just a few each day as you pass the bed.

If you do this now it will give the ones left behind space to grow so that by summer they are big, straight and delicious!

And don’t throw the ones you pick out, they maybe small but are still good for eating in salads.

Enjoy!
