Strong and long lasting

Keep on going, part 2 - Should it just be about convenience?

Gardening that is – although what could be more convenient than going into the garden to pick a salad for dinner, even if it does require ongoing effort to ensure the leafy greens and other goodies are there ready to pick when you need them.

I know that contending with the ongoing and significant trials day to day life is throwing at us all right now, maybe forever onwards, can overshadow everything and falling back into ‘easier’ habits is a constant temptation and simple to do as everything needed is provided everywhere at all times. But during this challenging period, keep remembering that what you eat contributes to how you feel and you cannot separate the food you eat from how it is grown and what is used to grow it.

We all know, even if it is a habit to ignore, that much of the food we purchase is heavily processed, relies on chemicals, go through a long production chain and uses up much of our very precious resources, but most importantly are not always very healthy – sugar, salt, flavourings, colourings, waxing’s and sprayings and much more, all for the sake of convenience and easy shopping.

We see and hear constantly about how unhealthy our race is, the costs and burdens to us all, but as shopping is the most important aspect of our local, national and global economy, little is done to point out the issues with the food we eat and the way it is made and delivered.

I start this year thinking more and more about all those here and around the world who are under environmental, political or economic stress and hope these burdens will help many more or us turn to simpler things, where the pursuit is its own reward and where time and effort reaps healthy and happy lives, remembering always that we are what we eat.

So is gardening worth the effort? Is eating as well as possible, necessary? Is life for living or just about surviving? Your answers will influence you resolve for the year, one way or the other.

And that will be that for the year, back to gardening tips and focus next week

Enjoy

Peter
