March Sowing

The year marches on and we move into a new season – well according to the very symmetrical Gregorian calendar, developed by a Pope back in 1582. Does that really apply to us? Well maybe for ease of day-to-day living, but for gardening!! Certainly, if we look to the indigenous calendars, developed quite some time before 1582, they are not that straight forward with many having at least 6 seasons. For those that are interested this is a link to BOM and the calendars for 18 different indigenous regions around Australia. It may be an interesting exercise to have a look at the traditional season in your local area - Indigenous seasonal calendars | The Bureau of Meteorology

That said can anything predict what is going on with the seasons currently! I can’t, but still plant and harvest as best I can. We have just had the wettest summer I can remember and in the last 2 weeks have had about 150mm of rain – our dam has water in it for the first time in summer that I can remember - fantastic! We may even get a colourful autumn, the maples are certainly showing signs of it.

And that all leads into the sowing opportunities for March – see below. As always temper this with knowledge about your own location, microclimate and knowing that not everything will work out as planned, so sow widely to ensure that somethings will be ready to harvest later in Autum / Winter.

Enjoy
