The rain seems to have started coming for a few and hopefully that will spread across to those that have not seen any for a while, me included. With this in mind, it is a good time to mulch, keeping all that moisture contained
Mulching material can be shredded bark, woodchips, old straw, spoilt hay, seaweed, leaves, sugarcane trash, hedge clippings, even sawdust, probably the cheapest option
Spread the mulch around the plants and leave to decay on the surface – do not dig it in as the beneficial bacteria, moulds and fungi that are breaking it all down, work better at this level.
Mulch can go straight over weeds, no need to dig them out first, the warm, moist conditions below the mulch will prevent seeds from ripening
Mulching also helps prevent soil erosions and of course it seals in moisture stopping it from evaporating, and helps steady the soil temperature
And doesn’t it make everything look better!
Enjoy
