I often talk about watering your garden with supplemented liquid fertiliser, of which there are many available, but you can add to the list by brewing your own. It really is not that difficult and most of the time involved is just letting the mixture sit and ferment.

You need to play around a bit with this as ratios will depend on what you are using. If you use mainly green waste, which holds lots of water and is relatively ‘fluffy’ in the bucket, you will need less water than if you are mixing it with manures or superfoods. So, in general use
You need to play around a bit with this as ratios will depend on what you are using. If you use mainly green waste, which holds lots of water and is relatively ‘fluffy’ in the bucket, you will need less water than if you are mixing it with manures or superfoods. So, in general use
- 1-part solids – superfoods, manures, green waste, compost
- Between 5 - 10 parts water
- Cover the container, remembering that liquid fertiliser is a fermented brew and needs breathing space as gasses will build up and you don’t want it to explode!
- After 2 weeks, cover your nose and check!
- When ready to use, take the mix and dilute it again, 5 - 10 parts water to 1-part fermented liquid (again depending on how strong it is) and use as normal.
- The amount to use will depend on the strength, but maybe about 100mls to a watering can.
Finally, keep the mixture somewhere safe – dogs and cats drink strange things that’s for sure. And remember, if it pongs it must be strong!
Enjoy (if you can)
