The equinox has happened, a turning point in the year and a shift in the gardens energy, and although the life in the soil starts to slow down preparing for the colder, shorter days, it does not mean that we should also, it is a mistake to think that gardening is a stop and start activity, nature, of which we are part, never stops.
At this time of the year, we need to be feeding and nurturing our soil, giving it the opportunity to breath and rejuvenate. This does not mean ripping everything up and throwing it all away, looking to start again in spring. Rather it is best to leave it all in place and just layer on top of what is there, helping to feed and enrich the soil and not disrupting the life – microbes and fungi living in it.
And don’t feel you have to build the entire bed up, especially if you already have seedlings growing, you can build up around them using planting mix. Sprinkle it into the empty spaces, don’t dig it in, just water it in and then mulch. This way you will not disturb the root system of the plants you already have growing, so they can keep on doing so.
So for now, we can build the soil up and plant to the season – a list of some things you can plant in March is at the end of this email, and really look to invest in the garden, which is very worthwhile, as do we really want to help Coles and Woolies make even more profit – they have just been named as 2 of the most profitable supermarkets in the world, so they certainly don’t need any more from us.
