Strong and long lasting

Citrus trees in winter.

We are getting pretty cold temperatures here and plenty of frost, and even though citrus trees prefer warmer climates, we have had some success with the lemons, oranges and grapefruit. It does require some extra work though through winter. Here are some tips to help with that.

Splitting fruit –irregular watering and a lack of calcium can cause this. So, water in a uniform manner and add calcium around the drip line as required.

Yellowing leaves – give the tree a good feed with some super food.

Avoid pruning – don’t prune the tree during winter. This can lead to new growth, which will get damaged by frost.

Watch out for pests – gall wasp and leaf minor in particular. If you spot any, spray with a natural kaolin-based spray like CGWS

Feed the tree – regularly top up the tree with good food. If the soil is unhealthy use a good quality planting mix around the base.

How do you know when the fruit is ready – give it a half twist and if it comes off, it is ready. If it does not, it isnt!

With the rind – dry it up, powered it down and use a teaspoon mixed with water and honey to make a natural antihistamine drink!

Enjoy!
