It feels as if we have had the first real summer for many years, and although that has been good to get the veggies ripe, it also gives the fruit fly a longer life!
Our weather uncertainties and changes has not deterred the fruit fly, that is adapting to the new conditions and creeping south further and further. We will have to rename them as they are no longer just a QLD pest.
What to do!
Fruition traps work well, and you can easily make your own using 1L or 2L plastic bottle. Make a small hole in the top for access, add a teaspoon of Vegemite, a teaspoon of sugar and some orange peel, fill the bottle one-third with water, then give it a good shake to dissolve the Vegemite and sugar.

If you have been using CGWS (Citrus Guard White Spray), keep applying that regularly to deter the flies laying eggs.
Don’t leave anything rotten under the trees.
And if you can, cover the tree with insect exclusion netting.
If you do spot them, it is best to report them to the local council
